Rumble Box and Cards
Unusual Studios was looking for a visual update on their card game, Rumble from it's previous design including logo, branding, icons, and card layout with the ultimate aim being launching to Kickstarter. They wanted to keep the character portraits from the first design, so the new graphic design style needed to compliment them.

The trading card game (TCG) market has some heavy hitters, and the main challenge of this project was to capture the game’s unique personality to make it stand out from the other options. It was also important to balance approachability for new players and including higher level play options for veterans.

Part of that approachability included being careful that the visuals were accessible to color blind and visually impaired folks. Clarity was key as the game is fast paced and decisions need to be made quickly.

An array of Rumble cardsA Champion and Warrior Pair

My priority for the card layout was fast recognition to the important information. The most important information is the card's stats and their ability. Each card's ability is based on either a offense or defense stat, so I made sure the copy was paired with the proper stat, as well as paired them with warm colors (offense) and cool colors (defense) accordingly. Cards are also categorized in two ways: Champion and Warrior. Champion cards are more powerful than warrior cards, so I wanted to differentiate them by giving them more pizazz! All Champion cards have gold as their secondary color, as well as laurels next to both stats and a filled in stat window. This way colorblind players can tell the Champions from the Warriors.

Concepts

Below are some concepts I did for possible layouts. At this time they weren't sure if they were sticking with their assets (as seen in Full Bleed and on the final product. We ended up going with the logo from Pixel, and refining the Action layout for the character portraits.
